About Chikkamagalur and Coffee
For many, coffee has been their preferred beverage for many years. Caffeine addicts enjoy taking small sips of coffee throughout the day in addition to starting their mornings with a push. Wouldn’t you like to know where your favourite cup of coffee originates if you enjoy a nice brew?
Nestled away among the rolling slopes of the Western Ghats, Chikkamagalur, Karnataka, is renowned for its verdant coffee plantations, which are flourishing now more than in the past. However, Chikkamagalur’s history and coffee-drinking customs are very old!
History has it that Chikkamagalur witnessed the first coffee crop bloom in the late 1600s. Seven~ Eight coffee seeds that Baba Budan, a saint, carried from Mecca were scattered on a hillside where he lived. Eventually, the hill was dubbed Baba Budan Giri or Dattareya Peeta and it developed into the hub from which the town’s coffee-growing customs sprang. The drink quickly grew to be an essential component of the community and later spread to coffee plantations. Today, Chikkamagalur is home to a coffee museum where enthusiasts can learn a great deal of useful information about the coffee they drink!
Our Story
Our home Thottimane ( courtyard house) is located in a small village 16 km from Chikkamagaluru, Malenahalli located to the south of the city, and beyond the Belur town. Thotti Mane has pond like structure (Thotti) in the centre, surrounded by a liminal courtyard with four pillars and rooms on all four sides, all enclosed under a single hipped sloping roof.
Our home is owned by our great grandfather BasaveGowdru – an educationist and a Jamin Dhar (land lord), where our Jagli Katte (verandaha space) served as a gathering space for the entire village, a place where people from all walks of life gathered, learned, played and held meaningful conversations. Our village boasts of a closely knit community with old traditional houses and people who have been living in the region for several generations.
